Justen Haynes
Justen Haynes was born in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Raised in a musical family, he grew up watching his parents perform with the gospel bluegrass band Sonrise, where his love for bluegrass music began at an early age.
By the age of four, Justen was already developing a passion for music and learning to play a variety of instruments. At nine years old, he stepped onto the stage for his first professional experience, playing bass with Sonrise. While bass was his role on stage, he spent countless hours on the road honing his skills on the banjo and fiddle—two instruments that would become central to his musical journey.
Throughout high school, Justen expanded his musical education by performing with several orchestras, including the Virginia State Symphony, gaining valuable experience in both classical and bluegrass settings. After graduation, he attended Shenandoah Conservatory as a viola performance major, where he held the prestigious position of first-chair violist during his time there.
While in college, Justen joined Michelle Nixon & Drive as a fiddler and vocalist. Touring with the band provided him with firsthand experience of life on the road and taught him the dedication, professionalism, and commitment required to build a career in bluegrass music. During this period, he also established himself as a sought-after freelance studio musician, recording with numerous successful bluegrass artists and bands.
After three years with Michelle Nixon & Drive, Justen joined the acclaimed bluegrass group IIIrd Tyme Out in 2005. For the next twelve years, he served as the band's fiddler, helping shape its signature sound and performing for audiences across the country until 2017.
In 2017, Justen shifted his focus to entrepreneurship, founding HLK9, a dog training, boarding, and grooming business. Under his leadership, HLK9 grew into a thriving and highly successful company. Today, his daughter, Jamie, is in the process of taking over the business, allowing Justen more time to return to his first musical love—the banjo.
We are thrilled to welcome Justen back to the stage, sharing his talent and passion for bluegrass music once again.
